Beyond the Weekend: Philippians: Choosing Joy Under Pressure

In Philippians: Choosing Joy Under Pressure, Pastor Jeff Manion and other teachers walk us through the book of Philippians. Throughout the series we learn how the life-giving connection to Jesus can empower us to experience extreme joy even while burdened with heave pressure.

Remedy of Humility

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. James 4:6

Read: James 4:1–10

Listen: James 4

TODAY'S MESSAGE

Humility was counter-cultural in first-century Rome. People considered humility to be a shameful and negative attribute. In Roman culture, you did everything in life to promote your own honor and esteem—you’d marry someone, choose a friend group and give money away to elevate your status. To be humble was to be a slave. You did not want to look like a slave.

Unfortunately, not much has changed in 2000 years. We struggle with pride differently in our culture, but it is just as insidious. Pride prevents us from giving or accepting an apology, asking for help, admitting we are wrong, or generously serving others. In his book, Humilitas John Dickson writes, “Humility is the noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself.” Humility is not a weakness. Humility is sacrificially using my skills, talents, and resources to serve and meet the needs of others.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

In your Chair Time today, read the powerful essay, The Great Sin by C.S. Lewis that Pastor Jeff referenced in his sermon. Turn to page 26 in your Philippians: Choosing Joy Under Pressure journal. Jot down key phrases and ideas that struck you. Ask God to give you the strength and courage to embrace humility, a teachable spirit and the willingness to serve others.
