TODAY'S MESSAGE
A recurring theme in the Psalms is that of rescue as demonstrated in the Exodus. After 400 years of brutal oppression, God finally rescues his chosen people. This is carried out despite the opposition of the great superpower Egypt and despite the unbelief and disobedience of the Israelites themselves. It was not only the ultimate demonstration of God’s power and character to that point, but it became a frequent metaphor whenever a psalmist wrote about being rescued.
That's what David does here in Psalm 66:6 when he reminds his readers of the events of Exodus 14. In doing so, he has them look back to a moment in history when, no matter what else God has done, he has stepped into time and delivered them. It’s rescue and redemption as only God can do.
The Psalms, in effect, bookend the two main reasons why God lays claim to our lives—creation and redemption. He made us, and he bought us. This is a God we can believe in.
